Tapes on Tapes

8-Channel Magnetic Tape Delay Matrix & Generative Loop Laboratory

An esoteric multi-channel magnetic tape playground engineered by Ancient Apparatus. Inspired by the hypnotic reels of 1970s tape loop pioneers, Tapes on Tapes weaves eight independent stereo tape loopers into a living feedback matrix. Route any channel into any other, reverse time at loop boundaries, modulate capstan motor drift, and dissolve your sound in lush analog saturation and resonant decay.

The Tape Weave Concept

MAX DELAY: 10.0 SECONDS PER CHANNEL

Traditional tape delays are linear repeats: your signal enters, hits a playback head, and decays. Tapes on Tapes re-envisions tape as an interconnected, multi-dimensional web. Eight independent tape loops spin simultaneously at distinct speeds, phases, and splice lengths. Channels can ingest live incoming audio—or feed directly into each other. A forward loop in Channel 1 can resample into a reversed, pitch-down loop in Channel 4, which cascades into a ping-ponging tape loop in Channel 7, creating infinite self-evolving ambient tapestries and polyrhythmic textures.

📼

8 Independent Tape Heads

Each channel has its own dedicated 10-second stereo circular tape buffer, variable splice length window, periodic capture gate engine, and smooth tape motor varispeed.

🔄

Cascading Matrix Feedback

Select any channel (CH 1–8) as the input source for another channel. Build complex feedback networks, recursive tape bounces, and evolving generative soundscapes.

⚡

Analog Tone & Degradation

Hyperbolic tangent tape saturation, warble/wow motor modulation (2.2Hz flutter), bit depth decimation, and resonant low-pass filtering with dynamic Q sweep.

SOURCE SELECTOR ROUTING

Selects the audio feed for the channel's write head. Set to IN for live external instrument/microphone audio, or select CH 1 through CH 8 to ingest the output of any other tape loop.

Options: IN, CH 1 – CH 8
DIR (DIRECTION) TRANSPORT

Dictates the tape travel direction. FWD (normal forward), REV (reverse tape spin), ALT (ping-pongs back and forth on loop boundary), or RNDM (probabilistic direction coin-toss).

Modes: FWD / REV / ALT / RNDM
SPLICE LENGTH LOOP GEOMETRY

Sets the physical length of the active tape loop splice window. Ranges from ultra-short micro-splices (sub-second granular repeats) up to 10 seconds of expansive room-scale tape loop.

Range: 0.1s to 10.0s
RATE (CAPTURE GATE) LOOP GEOMETRY

Controls the periodic capture gate engine. Opens the tape write head to record a slice of audio, then closes the gate to let the loop spin, degrade, and repeat without overwriting incoming material.

Interval: 0.1s to 10.0s
DECAY FEEDBACK

Determines how much existing tape magnetic flux is preserved on each loop pass. At 1.0 (100%), loops sustain indefinitely; as you turn it down, older layers gracefully dissolve into ambient tape noise.

Range: 0.00 (Single Tap) to 1.00 (Infinite)
OFFSET PHASE SHIFT

Displaces the read playhead relative to the loop boundary. Allows polyrhythmic phasing and Steve Reich-style phase-shifting counterpoints between multiple channels with identical splice lengths.

Range: 0.00 to 1.00 (0% – 50% splice shift)
SPEED VARISPEED

Controls the capstan motor drive velocity with seamless 20ms anti-zipper interpolation. Slowing the tape drops pitch and doubles loop time; speeding it up pitches audio upwards into shimmering tape flutter.

Range: 0.25x (Double Octave Down) to 2.00x
WARBLE ANALOG DRIFT

Introduces mechanical reel eccentricity, capstan belt slip, and wow/flutter motor instability via a dedicated 2.2Hz sine-drift modulation engine that bends tape pitch with vintage tape cassette character.

Range: 0% (Pristine) to 100% (Melted Cassette)
RESONANT LPF FILTER

State-Variable TPT low-pass filter featuring a dynamic auto-resonance algorithm. As cutoff sweeps below 19kHz, the Q resonance dynamically swells to create analog tape-head resonant warmth without harshness.

Frequency: 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz
SAT (SATURATION) TAPE DRIVE

Applies hyperbolic tangent (τανη) soft-clipping tape drive. Compresses peaks, fattens bass, and introduces musical odd harmonics that glue complex multi-channel loops together.

Range: 0.00 (Clean) to 1.00 (Heavy Tape Drive)
BITRATE (BITCRUSH) LO-FI DIGITAL

Decimates sample bit depth down from studio-grade 24-bit floating point into crusty 8-bit, 4-bit, and vintage sampler territory, delivering early digital delay grit and crunchy loop artifacts.

Range: 2.0 bits to 24.0 bits
VERB SEND REVERB BUS

Controls the individual auxiliary post-fader send level from this tape channel into the global Master Reverb engine, giving you precise depth placement for each loop.

Level: 0% to 100%

Tutorial Recipes

4 FIELD-TESTED PATCH TEMPLATES

Use these recipe templates as launchpads for your own generative tape experiments in Logic Pro, AUM, Ableton Live, or Standalone mode:

RECIPE #01

The Disintegration Loop

Hypnotic, decaying ambient tape study inspired by William Basinski.

SOURCE:IN (Channel 1) SPLICE:5.8 seconds RATE:8.0 seconds DECAY:0.92 (High) WARBLE:0.35 (Mild wow) LPF:2,800 Hz (Muffled) SAT:0.55 (Warm drive) DIR:ALT (Ping-Pong)
  1. Send a slow piano phrase or acoustic guitar chord into CH 1.
  2. The 8-second capture rate stamps a slice into memory, then closes the gate.
  3. Over 3 to 5 minutes, each pass sheds top-end frequencies into the warm saturation while the ALT ping-pong motion breathes in reverse.
RECIPE #02

Polyrhythmic Matrix Weave

Cascading generative drone where three tapes re-sample each other.

CH 1 SOURCE:IN • FWD • 1.0x CH 2 SOURCE:CH 1 • REV • 0.5x CH 3 SOURCE:CH 2 • ALT • 1.5x CH 1 SPLICE:3.0s (Base loop) CH 2 SPLICE:4.5s (Polyrhythm) CH 3 SPLICE:6.0s (Sub-bass) PANNING:CH 1 (L25), CH 2 (R30) MASTER VERB:Wet 45%, Size 85%
  1. Feed a single staccato pluck or melodic note into Channel 1.
  2. Channel 2 captures Channel 1 in reverse an octave down (0.5x speed).
  3. Channel 3 grabs the reversed octave from Channel 2 and pitches it up (1.5x speed). The three loops slide past each other infinitely without repeating the same alignment twice.
RECIPE #03

8-Bit Glitch Cassette

Granular micro-loop stutter, crushed digital artifacts, and random jitter.

Knowledge Base & FAQ

How does the Capture Rate interact with the Splice length?
Think of Splice Length as the physical length of the circular tape loop strip (e.g. 2.0 seconds). Rate is the timer that dictates how frequently the write head engages to record new sound onto the tape. If Splice is 2 seconds and Rate is 6 seconds, the machine records audio for 2 seconds, and then lets the tape spin and decay untouched for the next 4 seconds before grabbing another slice.
Can I create runaway feedback without blowing my speakers?
Yes! The built-in hyperbolic tangent (τανη) tape saturation automatically soft-limits and compresses excessive peaks, and the Master Console includes a brickwall Ceiling limiter to prevent clipping. Additionally, you can always pull the animated chrome FLUSH handle in the Master Console to immediately dump all 8 tape loops and reverb tails to silence.
How do I use Tapes on Tapes inside AUM, Logic Pro, or GarageBand for iPad?
Insert Tapes on Tapes as an Audio Effect (AUv3) on any audio track, bus, or aux return. In AUM, you can route multiple synth instruments directly into Tapes on Tapes, or map Bluetooth MIDI footswitches to toggle channels or trigger the emergency Flush handle during live performance.
Are parameter adjustments glitch-free during live performance?
Yes. All critical parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Decay, Offset, LPF Cutoff, and Pan) utilize 20ms linear smoothing algorithms to eliminate digital zipper noise and popping, ensuring smooth transitions even when drastically swinging tape speeds.
